Victorian Bushfire Information Line 1800 240 667

The Victorian Bushfire Information Line (VBIL) is a resource available to the public to gain information about current incidents. It also provides information regarding days of Total Fire Ban, fire restrictions and information concerning the Department of Sustainability and Environment’s prescribed burning program.

During the fire danger period, the call centre is staffed business hours and on days of Total Fire Ban, this gives the caller the option to speak directly to an operator.

Outside of these times, the line has recorded information only. This recorded information contains general information regarding Total Fire Bans and fire safety, as well as the facility to listen to recorded information regarding significant incidents that may have occurred at this time.

All significant fire information is maintained by the SECC Information Unit.

Callers who are deaf, hard of hearing, or have a speech/communication impairment may call the Victorian Bushfire Information Line through the National Relay Service by dialling the numbers below and then asking for 1800 240 667.

CFA Frequency Receiver

CFA & DSE Frequencies VHF Radio: Version 8 2004 Frequency Information

I purchased one of these handheld receivers today (May 31, 2007) for $130
from Brad at South Eastern Communications 0449 006 001.
I will let you know what I think of it when it arrives.

Brad delivered the receiver to me today (June 7)

First impressions:

To program the unit.

  1. Press and release the F (Function button)
  2. Press and release the 1 - MODE button (repeat until you enter VFO mode where the frequency is displayed)
  3. Enter the frequency you wish to receive eg: 163.4375 (For Ballarat Dispatch)
  4. Press F
  5. Press # - MS
  6. Press A or B to select the channel to save the frequency into
  7. Press C to save the frequency

I have had this receiver for a week now and I am very happy with it.
It fits in my shirt pocket comfortably, and was handy today on a turnout sitting in my overalls pocket.
The next thing I am going to buy for it is a speaker mike. It's nice and loud at work even in my pocket under a jumper but outside next to the tanker it was a little hard to hear from inside my overalls so an external speaker would be nice.

I have recently purchased a speaker mic and it's quite good. It has a robust clip. The only problem I have with it is that because the receive has been modified to prevent the transmit function the socket for the mic has been removed from the circuit board and the connector for the speaker mic is prone to fall out because only one of the 3.5mm Jack Phone plugs connects to the receiver. The sound quality is not quite as good as the built in speaker which is very good. Overall I am happy with the speaker mic.

November 21, 2007

I have had this receiver now for 5 months and I am very happy with it. One thing I can say is that it is tough. In the past 5 months I have managed to drop it about 6 times. Each time I pick it off the road or engine room floor I am more and more impressed with its build quality. Apart from a few minor cosmetic scratches it's in 100% working order despite my mishandling.

The BCT8 has to be put into Remote mode and the baud rate selected. On the radio keypad:

  1. Turn radio on normally.
  2. Press and hold the ". / RMT" key for 2 seconds or more. The radio displays "RMT OFF" or the current speed (bps).
  3. Press the "UP ARROW" or "DOWN ARROW" keys to select the desired speed (57,600 bps is recommended) or select "OFF" to deactivate Remote Mode.
  4. Press the "E" key to make the selection. The radio returns to normal display mode.
  5. The "RMT" indicator will now be visible on the radio display indicating Remote Mode is active.

NOTE: While the radio is in Remote mode the keypad is available for normal use. Remote mode remains active until you deactivate it, even if you power the radio on and off.

Start ScanControl while the radio is in Remote mode.

Quansheng Transceiver
The english manual that comes with the TG-25AT is a little cryptic. A nice example is that they call “transmit” “launch” throughout. Here’s my interpretation.
